Spring/Summer 2018 – Ghana, Africa

VARAS summer volunteer program in Ghana is the cheapest, efficient and rewarding summer volunteer opportunities the volunteer can find abroad. Our projects are not only volunteer oriented but also aim to bring sustainable change in the communities we serve with full participation of the locals.

During this summer vacation trip, while the volunteer’s aspiration of relaxing and having fun during the summer is fulfilled through the visit to Ghana’s breath taking tourist sites and a complete cultural immersion by staying in the host community or a local host family, you as well make an impact in the lives of the less privileged in Ghana.  We call it “useful summer holiday/vacation abroad” because of the unique combination of enjoying one’s vacation abroad to the fullest while putting smile on the faces of the needy in Africa.

Spring/Summer 2018 Construction Project

Project: Construction of Tailoring and Dressmaking Training Centre for the less Privileged young Men and Women.

In order to achieve its vision of bridging the yawning developmental gap between the urban centers and the rural areas in Ghana, VARAS has initiated the project of empowerment of the poor rural folks with income generating skills. There is a score of young girls and boys in rural communities who have dropped out of school due to lack of financial support or who could not pursue formal education due to poverty. In these conditions, when no help is given to these young ones to acquire an employable skill they end up miserably. This then leads to an increase of the rate of poverty since they go on to give birth to children who end up in similar condition as their parents. In order to provide these rural poor young men and women with an employable skill, VARAS has come up with the Dressmaking and Tailoring training project. Dressmaking and tailoring are lucrative ventures which can help increase the income of the family and break the vicious circle of poverty. At the end of the training, these young rural folks will be assisted with a sewing machine to set up their own sewing workshop or re-engaged as an instructor. Click here to read more about the project.

Activities: Specific tasks include: mixing mortar, carrying of mortar, laying blocks, fetching water, cracking stone, train young men and women to learn to sew etc.
