Impact Travel is a "post" COVID-19 traveling opportunity offered to international volunteers who would like to drive change in communities devastated by the pandemic and other communities with already existing challenges. Coronavirus has brought to bear the existing failing health system, poor quality and lack of access to education, the marginalization of girls and women, and prevalence of abject poverty in rural Ghana.
With over fifteen years of community volunteer placement experience, VARAS designed the Impact Travel community engagement and volunteerism multiple yet optional volunteer programs available to professionals and non-professionals to select from.
The unique thing about Impact Travel is that, the
1. Volunteer plays an integral part in the design of the community program volunteering on
2. Volunteer is hosted in the implementing community
3. Volunteer sees the impact of their work even before departure
4. Volunteer is taken through orientation on primary language and cultural lessons of the host community and Ghana
5. Volunteer gets the opportunity to embark on sightseeing travels
6. Volunteer is volunteering in freedom
7. Volunteer only pays for food, accommodation, transportation, and project coordination. There are NO hidden charges.
With the coming of covid-19, young girls and women are one of the most affected especially in rural Ghana. The rate of girls and women abuse increased exponentially according to the gender department of Ghana. The women apprenticeship and production programme is aim to train and employ women who have dropped out of school due to poverty, teenage pregnancy, disease, domestic violence, physical disability and those who wishes to learn a vocation. These women apprentices are taken through varied vocations but mainly sewing and dressmaking. 10 to 15 women are train for a period of one year of which they shall be given a sewing machines to commence business and or be employed in the Production Programme. The goal is to train and create ready employment so these women can live a dignify life, socially and economically empowered so they can care for themselves and their families hence breaking the vicious cycle of poverty in the short and long term. Activities of the impact volunteer on the ground will include,
· Construction of apprenticeship centre - mixing mortar, laying blocks, fetching sand, fetching water, plumbing work, carpentry work.
· Training sewing skills and fashion design
· Teaching basic entrepreneurship, english language and mathematics
. Women mentorship
Quality health care delivery in rural communities in Ghana has always been a challenge especially since the emergence of coronavirus. This is due to inadequate supply of personnel, inadequate health care delivery materials, and the lack of funds in the implementation of government’s public health programmes. Most of these challenges are mainly seen in rural communities which constitute more than 60% of the Ghanaian population. To avert this and under our Health for All Programme (HAP), we aim to bring health care to the door step of communities. VARAS in partnership with hospitals and local clinics, and under the direction and assistance of a local physician and nurses, the impact volunteer shall
· Assist local nurses educate community members about covid-19, personal hygiene, sexually transmitted infections and girls care.
· Through public engagement, home visit and public address system, educate communities on environmental sanitation, cleanliness etc
. Run community health screening

One of the major hard hit sectors affected by covid-19 is education. With children out of school for more than a year, there is a lot to catch up with academic work. It has been established that, 3 out every 5 students may not be ready to sit for the basic exam due to the gap year. There is therefore the need to devote more time to catch up. This will be through provision of resource materials and the teaching of same. Unfortunately, the government is money constraint to provide these facilities due to the impact of the pandemic. Also the rate of teen pregnancy is on the rise since young girls become vulnerable and are provide food for the family due to the impact of coronavirus
Under the Impact Travel initiative, the volunteer will among other things
. Mentor students especially young girls who are affected directly or indirectly by the pandemic
. Teaching of troubling subjects - Creative Arts, Music and Science
. Building of on-site water supplies and sanitation materials to community schools
. Groom students in career development and business development
Impact traveller shall volunteer as long as he/she wishes and as long as the program volunteering on takes. Also you can participate in all three community programmes above.
The programme starts from January to December 2023.
Day 1-3 : Arrival and Orientation
Day 4-10 : Programme Implementation
Day 11-14 : Excursion/Programme Evaluation and Departure
Impact Traveller as part of the trip shall visit tourist sites such as the Wli waterfall, Afadza mountain. This is optional.
Impact Traveller is expected to pay a non-refundable programme fee which covers food, accommodation, transportation, and project coordination. Contact us for your quote.

1. Get a passport and travel ticket
2. Visa (VARAS shall send you attestation letter to enable you secure your visa at the Ghana Consulate in your country)
3. COVID-19 vaccine shots and a negative test result, Malaria shot or pills (See your travel doctor for more information)
